Brooks’ Story

On August 5, 2022, Brooks was taken to the doctor to be seen for stomach pain. Upon examination, doctors sent him to the ER for what was thought to be an enlarged spleen. After further testing it was determined that what they were feeling was not his spleen but a tumor on his kidney. At the age of four, Brooks was diagnosed with a stage 4 diffuse anaplastic Wilms’ tumor. It was determined that he had 10-15 tumors between his two lungs.

Brooks immediately underwent surgery, four rounds of chemotherapy and 2.5 weeks of radiation. At the beginning of December 2022, a CT scan revealed new spots on his lungs indicating treatment was no longer working. Doctors came up with a new plan and Brooks is currently undergoing chemo as part of that plan. His latest CT scans indicate that this plan is effective so he will continue receiving this proposed treatment. He will soon be undergoing stem cell retrieval in preparation that he may also need a bone marrow transplant as part of his treatment plan.

Brooks has a complex case and the journey has not been smooth. His family lives a couple of hours away from the hospital where he receives care so there is lots of travel and overnights involved in his treatment as well. While the road has not been easy, he remains upbeat and surrounded by the love of his mom, dad, big sister and so many others. The song ‘In Jesus Name’ by Katy Nichole has carried a special meaning for their family throughout this journey. They chose to incorporate this meaningful phrase into their t-shirt design as well as Brooks’ favorite color, blue.
